COMMON QUESTIONS
Come as you are.
We’ll figure out the next step together.
Whether you’re returning to exercise, navigating changes in your body, looking for more personalized support or simply unsure where to begin, you don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out.
Start with your questions. We’ll take it from there.
START WHERE YOU ARE
You don’t need to be ready.
You just need a starting point.
Here are answers to some of the most common questions. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, reach out. We’re always happy to help.
Do I need to be fit before I start?
No.
Getting fit before working with a coach defeats the purpose of having a coach.
You start from where you are today. Your current strength, mobility, fitness level and confidence simply give us a starting point.
From there, we build progressively.
You don’t need to prove that you belong in the gym before you begin. Part of the process is helping you develop the strength, skills and confidence to feel capable there.
Is this suitable for complete beginners?
Absolutely.
You don’t need previous gym experience, knowledge of exercises or a certain level of fitness to begin.
In fact, starting with coaching can be an advantage because you learn good movement patterns, appropriate technique and sensible training habits from the beginning.
The goal isn’t to throw you into advanced exercises.
It’s to meet you where you are and build from there.
What if I haven’t exercised in years?
That’s completely okay.
We don’t try to make up for lost time by pushing you harder than your body is ready for.
We establish what you can comfortably and confidently do now, then gradually build your strength, movement capacity and conditioning.
Progress doesn’t require starting aggressively.
It requires starting appropriately and continuing consistently.
What if I’m nervous about going to the gym?
You’re not alone.
Gym environments can feel intimidating when you don’t know the equipment, the exercises or what you’re supposed to be doing.
Part of coaching is removing that uncertainty.
You’ll learn how to use the equipment, understand your exercises and train with someone there to guide you.
Over time, the goal isn’t dependence on your coach.
It’s confidence in yourself.

ONE-TO-ONE SUPPORT
When your goals are personal, your coaching should be too.
What happens in personal coaching?
Personal coaching begins by understanding you rather than handing you a generic workout.
We look at your goals, current abilities, training experience, movement, lifestyle and what you want your body to be capable of doing.
From there, your training is built around your starting point and progresses as you do.
You’ll receive coaching on technique, movement and training decisions, along with the accountability and support needed to keep moving forward.
Will every session be the same?
No.
Your program has structure, but that doesn’t mean repeating exactly the same workout forever.
Exercises, resistance, volume and complexity can evolve as your strength, skill and confidence improve.
Some movements may remain in your program long enough for you to actually get better at them. Others may change as your needs change.
The goal is purposeful progression, not random workouts.
Do you provide nutrition guidance?
Yes.
Nutrition guidance can be part of personal coaching when it supports your goals.
The emphasis is practical and sustainable rather than restrictive.
We can look at areas such as protein intake, meal structure, hydration, recovery habits and nutrition strategies that support training and body composition.
The goal is to help you build habits you can actually maintain.
Do you offer online coaching?
Yes.
Online coaching is available for people who want individualized programming and coaching support but either live outside Smithers or prefer to train independently.
Depending on the coaching arrangement, support can include personalized programming, exercise guidance, video form review, accountability and ongoing adjustments.
You do the training where you are.
You still have a coach behind the plan.
Can two people train together?
Yes.
Buddy or couples training can be a great option when two people want to train together.
Even when you share a session, each person may have different abilities, limitations or progression needs.
That means the session is still coached rather than simply giving two people the exact same workout regardless of their needs.
STRONGER TOGETHER
Group training without getting lost in the group.
What is Horizon Strong?
Horizon Strong is New Horizon Fitness’s progressive group-training system.
Instead of offering disconnected workouts, training is organized around four different practices:
Foundation develops fundamental strength and confidence.
Move develops mobility, balance and movement control.
Power develops athletic strength, coordination and physical capability.
Metabolic develops stamina, conditioning and work capacity.
You can begin with the practice that best matches what you need now and continue progressing as your abilities and goals evolve.
How is this different from a typical fitness class?
The goal isn’t simply to make you tired for an hour.
Every Horizon Strong practice has a purpose.
You’re developing strength, movement quality, athletic capacity or conditioning through coached progression rather than completing random workouts designed primarily to feel difficult.
There is still energy, challenge and community.
But underneath it is a training process.
You should leave knowing you’re building something.
What if other people in the class are fitter than me?
That’s expected.
People rarely enter a group with identical strength, mobility, experience or confidence.
Exercises can be adjusted so you can train appropriately while still participating in the same overall practice.
You don’t need to keep up with the person beside you.
You need to train at the level that helps you progress.
You’re developing your capacity, not competing with someone else’s.
Which practice should I start with?
That depends on what you need most.
Foundation is ideal when you want to build fundamental strength, learn key movement patterns and develop confidence.
Move is designed for improving mobility, balance, coordination and freedom of movement.
Power develops athletic strength, coordination, force production and physical capability.
Metabolic focuses on stamina, conditioning and your ability to sustain and recover from physical work.
If you’re unsure, we can help you choose the most appropriate starting point.
MIDLIFE IS NOT THE FINISH LINE
What if my body feels different than it used to?
What is Menopause Strong?
Menopause Strong is a coaching program designed for women navigating perimenopause, menopause and the years beyond.
It brings together progressive strength training with practical support around recovery, nutrition, body composition and sustainable lifestyle habits.
Midlife changes can affect how your body responds to training, stress and recovery.
The answer isn’t necessarily to exercise harder.
It’s to train more intelligently for the body and life you have now.
Is Menopause Strong only for women who are already in menopause?
No.
Menopause is a transition, not a single moment.
Women can experience changes during perimenopause for years before reaching menopause, and many of the same training and lifestyle considerations remain important afterward.
Menopause Strong is designed to support women through that broader stage of life rather than focusing on a single age or date.
Is the goal weight loss?
Not necessarily.
Body composition can absolutely be one of your goals, but Menopause Strong is built around something larger.
Strength. Muscle. Physical capability. Recovery. Confidence. Long-term health.
How your body performs and how you feel in it matter alongside what the scale says.
For some women, changing body composition will be part of the journey.
It doesn’t have to be the entire journey.
What if what used to work for me doesn’t work anymore?
That is one of the reasons Menopause Strong exists.
Midlife isn’t the time to punish your body harder because an old strategy stopped producing the same result.
Your training, recovery capacity, lifestyle and priorities may be different now.
Instead of trying to force your body back into an old formula, we reassess what you need today.
Then we build an approach around that.
Different chapter. Still your body. Still capable of becoming stronger.
PREGNANCY & POSTPARTUM
Not a return to who you were. A stronger way forward.
Can I lift weights during pregnancy?
For many people with uncomplicated pregnancies, appropriately modified resistance training can be part of a healthy activity routine. Your circumstances, symptoms, training history and healthcare guidance determine what’s appropriate.
When can I start training after giving birth?
There is no single answer. We begin with gentle movement and breathing when you feel ready and your healthcare provider agrees, then progress based on your recovery, symptoms and goals.
What if I’ve had a caesarean birth?
Recovery after a caesarean follows its own timeline. Your programme accounts for healing, core and pelvic floor considerations, and progresses only as your body is ready.
What if I experience leaking, pelvic heaviness or pain?
These are signals we take seriously. We adjust your training and, where appropriate, recommend you see a pelvic health physiotherapist or your healthcare provider.
Can I begin if I’ve never done strength training?
Yes. Your programme starts from your current experience and builds gradually. Every movement is taught with demonstrations and, depending on your package, individual feedback.
THE DETAILS
A few things you may want to know.
Where does training take place?
In-person personal coaching and New Horizon Fitness training are based in Smithers, British Columbia.
Online coaching is also available for people who want individualized programming and support but are not training locally.
How often should I train?
There isn’t one training schedule that works for everyone.
The right frequency depends on your goals, experience, recovery, schedule, other activities and the type of coaching you choose.
More training is not automatically better training.
We’ll help you establish a schedule that provides enough stimulus to make progress while still being realistic enough to maintain.
Consistency matters more than creating a schedule you can’t sustain.
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely and appropriate athletic footwear.
You don’t need special fitness clothing or expensive equipment to begin.
If a particular session or program requires anything different, you’ll know beforehand.
Do I need to bring equipment?
For in-person coaching and group training, the equipment required for your training is available in the training environment unless you’re specifically told otherwise.
For online coaching, your program can be designed around the equipment available to you.
What if I have an injury or medical condition?
Tell us before you begin.
In many situations, training can be adjusted around individual limitations, previous injuries or health considerations.
However, fitness coaching is not a substitute for medical assessment, physiotherapy or rehabilitation.
Depending on your situation, we may recommend medical clearance or collaboration with an appropriate healthcare professional before or alongside training.
The priority is helping you train appropriately—not ignoring something that needs professional assessment.
How much does coaching cost?
The cost depends on the type and level of coaching you choose.
Personal coaching, group training, online coaching and specialty programs provide different levels of support, so there isn’t one price that applies to everyone.
The easiest place to begin is with a conversation.
We’ll talk about what you’re looking for, explain the options that make sense and make sure you understand the cost before you decide.
No pressure. No surprises.
STILL WONDERING?
What if I’m still not sure this is right for me?
Then don’t make a decision yet.
Have a conversation.
Tell us where you are, what you’re struggling with and what you’d like to change.
We’ll help you understand which option makes sense, or whether New Horizon Fitness is the right fit at all.
No pressure. No need to prove anything.
YOUR NEXT CHAPTER
Strong for today.
Capable for life.
You don’t need to know exactly where the journey leads.
You just need a place to begin.
